Just when we thought the heat in regards the MTN and NCC saga has gone down, news reaching us has it that MTN has disconnected 4.5million unregistered numbers.
This not-so-nice development gave room to the telecommunication company experiencing a profit decline by 6.9% this month.
Despite the whole saga, Executive Chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko believes it will secure MTN’s reputation regarding regulatory matters including subscriber registration processes. In a statement, here is what he had to say:
In order to mitigate any future regulatory challenges, the group took an exceptionally conservative stance by disconnecting all subscribers who could possibly be deemed to be non-compliant.
This has had a significant unfavourable impact on total subscriber growth and revenue in Q1 16. Nonetheless, we believe this resolve to address compliance matters decisively, has put the Group on a solid footing as regards the subscriber registration process and regulatory matters in general.
No, all disconnected sims were not all unregistered. Some not-properly registered SIMs were also part of the extinction.
The company’s new drive would be winning new subscribers and in doing this, MTN may have to launch some luring offers or put some strategic planning to work.
